True Freedom

by Rosemary ~ June 2nd, 2007

I’m reading Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism, edited by by John Piper and Wayne Grudem. In it, John Piper says that today freedom is

…judged on the basis of immediate sensations of unrestrained license or independence. But true freedom takes God’s reality and God’s purpose for creation into account and seeks to fit smoothly into God’s good design. Freedom does include doing what we want to do. But the mature and wise woman does not seek this freedom by bending reality to fit her desires. She seeks it by being transformed in the renewal of her desires to fit in with God’s perfect will (Romans 12:2). The greatest freedom is found in being so changed by God’s Spirit that you can do what you love to do and know that it conforms to the design of God and leads to life and glory.

Too often my penchant is to bend, or try to bend, reality to fit my desires. The resulting frustration is an indication that I’m going beyond the bounds of God’s perfect will and taking things into my own hands. I’ve found that there is no satisfaction in that, even though I may have managed to have my way. The old saying is true: God’s way is the best way. May we be so changed by God’s Spirit that we can do what we love to do and know that it conforms to the design that God has for us.

I have this book, but honestly have not ever read it. The quote you posted is the encouragement to get started on it.

“I’ve found that there is no satisfaction in that, even though I may have managed to have my way.”

I do, unfortunately, know that way of life too well. Frank Sinatra can have at it. I do so desire to do all things God’s well. May He persevere in me!

    I agree :)

that said I’m not sure that the fundies have it right with their understanding of women in church leadership / ministry - but I expect we won’t know for sure until heaven, and then we’ll be focused on other things :)

I like Piper’s writing though. Great man of God
