The way we were

This picture holds so many memories for me. It was 1974, a few months before our first son was born. I remember the dress as though I wore it yesterday. It was apple green with white threads running through it, with a contrasting collar. I sewed it out of polyester double-knit, the indestructible fabric of the 70’s. Harry’s suit was new; we had just returned from 2 years of ministry to hippies in Afghanistan and Nepal. Married for five years, we were thrilled to be having our first child, and happily had no idea of what was ahead in the next few years or how our faith was about to be mightily tested. As I look at our faces, I remember our naive sincerity, and I feel a sad fondness for us. Mostly, I’m thankful for God’s severe mercies that shook the livin’ daylights out of us and tutored us in the knowledge of Himself. He has been utterly, utterly loving and faithful.

I just wish we had some of that dark hair back…

I love the picture. God lovingly grows us doesn’t He, but there are definately growing pains.

Oh, you look so sweet! I do remember polyester double knit. It’s fun to look at old pictures and think about how we were.

I don’t think I’d want to go back to that young naive sincerity.

Oh, boy, do I remember polyester double knits and leisure suits!

What a great picture! I, too, sometime think of the “us” of older pictures almost as other people and feel a stab of nostalgia.

The eyes that look back into our present eyes have no idea what awaits. That is still true, isn’t it?

No, I wouldn’t want to go back to the young naive sincerity.

And yes, it is still true that we have no idea what awaits. But oh, the difference in my belief in and love of God’s sovereignty!

I love your picture! And I do remember that “indestructible fabric of the 70’s.” Makes me think of some dresses I sewed in that era myself…

Ah yes, those living daylights now replaced with refined eternal light–a treasure for certain. Thanks for such a great picture–of face and heart.

What sweet victory, to be on the other side of having the living’ daylights shaken out of us, and know the praise and glory of the revelation of Jesus Christ!
