Samuel Rutherford: The Loveliness of Christ

by Rosemary ~ December 26th, 2007

thelovelinessofchrist.jpgOne of the best little treasures found in my Christmas stocking is this sumptuous little book, The Loveliness of Christ, from the letters of Samuel Rutherford. The soft red leather binding is a feast for the eyes, and the contents I’ve read so far are a feast for the heart. I can understand why they’re referred to as ‘Rutherford’s Diamonds.’ I’m certain that you’re going to read little snippets of it here, starting today.

You will not get leave to steal quietly to heaven, in Christ’s company, without a conflict and a cross.

God hath called you to Christ’s side and the wind is now in Christ’s face in this land; and seeing ye are with Him, ye cannot expect the lee-side or the sunny side of the brae.

(brae: slope of a hill)

There’s just something very wonderful about leather bound books. I wish all my favourites were leather bound.
