I’ve had it with moths
by Rosemary ~ July 7th, 2008If thousands of moths, both beautiful and ugly, crowd around a lighted candle, can the candle help it? (spoken by Estella in Great Expectations.)
That quote, memorized when I was a freshman in high school, floats to the front of my mind twice a year
when we are descended upon by the infamous Colorado Miller Moth, known as the bane of Coloradoans. Sometime towards the end of May, they arrive. In droves, and I’m not exaggerating. I’m sorry to say they’re still here. The weather has been particularly dry and apparently they’re loving it. I can assure you we are not.
The fifth through seventh chapters of Matthew in my Bible were drenched with coffee because a moth came crawling out of the sleeve of my robe the other morning.
The annoying things are not really worthy of writing a post about them, and especially of taking a photo of one, but since I’ve had it with them it somehow seems right to state it publicly. Maybe it’ll make them go away.

Maybe they could take our mosquitoes with them when they go. . .

I would have spilled my coffee too! I hope they fly away soon.
And I love these little travel tidbits of information (things you’d never know about Colorado from a travel guide!) :0)

i’m a Coloradan and for some reason, this year we did not have the usual infestation of these unbidden creatures in our neck of the woods. chipmunks on the other hand, have made camp in every rockwall and quasi-attractive burrowing space … and they have impressively swindled the record for procreation from the rabbit!!!!! drat … they are impossible little creatures. my beloved and i have decided to turn the other cheek (as it were) in an effort to forgive their proclivities toward mass destruction and the ruin of what might have been a rather lovely garden here in the forest. harumpf!!!!!

When we lived in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains we would often forget the beauty due to the cloud of black flies every May, that would hover over our back door just waiting to pounce. Followed by the gnats all summer, mosquitos the size of a small cessna.
Here I thought Colorado was perfect!

I’m a fellow Coloradan and can say that in our neck of the state, they weren’t too bad this year. I can be pretty mellow about most bugs but the miller moths drive me nuts. I’m serious when I tell you that they attack me. They just don’t seem to be your usual ‘head for the light and hide’ type of moths. I’m always glad to see them go. I feel your pain.
