Sunday Hymn: O Thou Who Camest From Above

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

O Thou Who camest from above,
The pure celestial fire to impart,
Kindle a flame of sacred love
Upon the mean altar of my heart.
There let it for Thy glory burn
With inextinguishable blaze,
(or, Unquenched, undimmed, in darkest days,)
And trembling to its source return,
In humble prayer and fervent praise.
Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire
To work and speak and think for [...]

Upon a snowy morning…

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

I am certain that this will continue to be one of my favorite pictures of our home.
Some of the icicles that had been hanging from the roof were already melting, but you can still see the ones that remain. Our dog, Libby, loves it when they break off–she eats them.
You can click the picture for [...]

Upon a snowy evening…

Friday, October 27th, 2006

We had a gorgeous snowstorm yesterday here on the Palmer Divide of Colorado. We live at an altitude of 7,500 ft. above sea level, a little over half as high as Pike’s Peak. The snow fell wet and heavy, perfect for snowballs and snowmen. By noon it was knee deep, blowing and drifting even higher. [...]

Rooted in Christ Jesus

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

From Spurgeon: “Our root is Christ Jesus, and our life is hidden in Him; this is the secret of the Lord. The source of the Christian life is as secret as the life itself. How permanently active is the water in the cedar! In the Christian the divine life is always full of energy–not always [...]

Mercy

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power [...]

Sunday Hymn: Before the Throne of God Above

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea;
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart;
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
When Satan tempts me to despair
And [...]

solitude and silence

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

There are times when solitude is better than company, and silence is wiser than speech. We would be better Christians if we were alone more often, waiting on God and gathering through meditation on His Word spiritual strength for service in His kingdom. We ought to ponder the things of God, because that is how [...]

Sunday Hymn: More Love to Thee, O Christ

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

More love to Thee, O Christ,
More love to Thee!
Hear Thou the prayer I make
On bended knee;
This is my earnest plea:
More love, O Christ, to Thee,
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!
Once earthly joy I craved,
Sought peace and rest;
Now Thee alone I seek,
Give what is best;
This all my prayer shall be:
More love, O Christ, to [...]

Contentment

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

“Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, which freely submits to and delights in God’s wise and fatherly disposal in every condition.” —Jeremiah Burroughs

Sunday Hymn: God Moves in a Mysterious Way

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign will.
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.
Judge not [...]
