The will of God and savory speech

by Rosemary ~ February 15th, 2007

“Whatever God wills us to do is for our benefit (Deut. 10:12,13)…It is God’s will that we should repent, and this is for our good, (since) repentance ushers in remission…It is God’s will that we should believe, that we should be crowned with salvation…What God wills is not so much our duty, as our privilege. Let us examine all our actions whether they are according to God’s will. The will of God is the rule and standard…it is the sundial by which we must set all our actions…Are your speeches according to God’s will? Are our words savory, being seasoned with grace? Are we patterns of prudence and piety? Do we keep up the credit of religion, and shine as lights in the world?” …Patient submission to God’s will is a gracious frame of soul, whereby a Christian is content to be at God’s disposal, and acquiesces in his wisdom.” –Thomas Watson, died 1689

I particularly like, and take to heart, “Are your speeches according to God’s will? Are our words savory, being seasoned with grace?” I chose the name for this blog–’Seasonings of the Heart’–because I want what I write to be just that: a savory, grace-filled seasoning that draws my heart and yours to Him who is the Source of all grace and mercy. Sometimes I am prone to speech that is sharp rather than gracious and my actions reveal a chafing rather than a contentment toward the will of God. Mr. Watson’s words made their mark today.
